At D Hockey Coach, we believe that becoming an elite hockey player goes far beyond skill development. True long-term success is built on three essential pillars: Determination, Habits and Confidence. These three pillars form the core philosophy of DHC and are the foundation of everything we teach — on the ice, off the ice and in life. 1. Determination
Determination is the fuel. It’s what pushes you to keep going when training gets hard, when you’re losing or when progress feels slow. Talent gets you in the door, but determination keeps you in the game. Without it, even the most gifted players eventually quit or plateau. 2. Habits
Habits are the system. You don’t rise to the level of your goals — you fall to the level of your systems. Elite players aren’t just talented; they have built daily habits in training, recovery, nutrition, mindset and preparation that compound over time. Small, consistent habits create massive results. 3. Confidence
Confidence is the weapon. It’s not arrogance — it’s earned trust in your preparation and abilities. When you’ve put in the work through determination and strong habits, confidence allows you to play freely, make bold plays and perform under pressure. Why These Three Pillars Work Together Determination gets you started.
Habits keep you going.
Confidence makes you dangerous. When these three are developed together, they create a powerful cycle: Determination drives better habits → Better habits build real confidence → Strong confidence fuels even greater determination. This is why we don’t just run hockey drills. We build better athletes and better people through the DHC Philosophy. Whether you’re a young player dreaming of making the next level, a parent wanting the best for your child or a dedicated athlete chasing your full potential — these three pillars will be your greatest advantage. In the upcoming articles of this series, we will dive deep into each pillar individually and share real-life examples from my coaching and playing career. Stay tuned. Which of the three pillars do you need to work on most right now? Let me know in the comments. — Darick Ste-Marie
